That Time I Accidentally Went To Jesus Camp

“So tell us a little about your faith and your relationship with Jesus,” the Kanakuk camp counselor asked me expectantly. With the eyes of all my fellow campers on me, I looked around the campfire in a slight panic and replied, “Well I’m half Jewish…” There was a momentary look of confusion on the camp counselor’s face, but he quickly recovered his composure. He then proceeded to put his hand on my knee and tell me, “Wow! It is so brave of you to come here.”

And in that moment, I knew it was going to be a long two weeks…

My journey in the summer of 2005 to this overnight camp in Branson, Missouri started with the simple desire to live a more normal American teenage life.
